SerenDestiny #21: WSJ Article Proves Grateful People are Happier, Healthier, Longer

“If the only prayer we ever said was ‘thank you,’ That would be enough.” – Meister Ekhart

Agreed.

After interviewing thousands of people who feel they’re living a life of purpose on purpose, I’ve discovered they share one thing in common.

They’re all uncommonly grateful.

Every single one of them talks about how “fortunate” they’ve been. Every single one is acutely aware of all that’s right with their life. They count their blessings on a daily basis – no matter what.

I’ve come to believe this is a chicken and egg kind of thing.

Are they happy because they’re grateful?

Or are they grateful because they’re happy?

It doesn’t matter what comes first . . . as long as we conscioulsy choose to practice grattitude.

This recurring theme of the power of a Gratitude Mindset runs throughout my upcoming book on SerenDestiny .

I was just adding an interview with a MOMpreneur who talks about the role gratitude has played in creating a business she runs from home so she can be with her kids.

So, it was wonderful to open the Wall St. Journal delivered to my hotel room this morning with my coffee (BTW – I”m grateful for staying here at the Grand Lakes Ritz Carlton in Orlando, Florida while speaking for the National Federation of Women Legislators) . . . and see the following article showing science is now supporting the fact that “grateful people are happier, healtheir, longer.”

What’s this mean for you?

It means being grateful isn’t just for Thanksgiving.
It’s a year-round practice that will reap a myriad of benefits for you and for the people around you.

So, so do we turn this understanding into action?

You’ve heard the phrase out of sight – out of mind?

Put the following Give Thanks – Be Grateful Quotes on your refrigerator so they stay in sight, in mind.

Gratitude quote #1: “When you drink the water, remember the well.” – Chinese proverb

Gratitude quote #2: “Make yourself a blessing to someone. Your kind smile or pat on the back just might pull someone back from the edge.” – Carmelia Elliott

Gratitude quote #3: “Look at everything as though you were seeing it for the first or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory.” – Betty Smith

Gratitude quote #4: “When you give and carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling. It’s as though something inside your body responds and says, ‘Yes, this is how I ought to feel.'” – Rabbi Harold Kushner

Gratitude quote #5: “What a wonderful life I’ve had! I only wish I’d realized it sooner.” – Colette

Gratitude quote #6: “Unless people like you care a whole lot, things aren’t going to get better, they’re not!” – Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Gratitude quote #7: In Thornton Wilder’s play Our Town, Emily longs to revisit one ordinary, “unimportant” day. When she gets her wish, she realizes how much she took for granted. “I didn’t realize all that was going on and we never noticed. Good-bye Grover’s Corners, Mama, Papa, sunflowers, food, coffee, hot baths, sleeping and waking up. Oh, earth, your’e too wonderful for anybody to realize you.”

Bonus Gratitude quote:
“Normal day, let me aware of the treasure you are.
Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may; for it may not always be so.
One day I shall dig my nails into the earth . . . or raise my hands to the sky
and want, more than all the world, your return.” – Mary Jean Iron
